This is a Japanese mandarin hybrid between a Ponkan tangerine and a Kiyomi tangor. The fruit is incredibly easy to peel, like all the best mandarins, but much larger in size. Eating one fruit feels like you are eating about three mandarins. The flavor is also incredibly sweet but with a tart kick at the end to help you remember that you are alive, and that this is in fact not a dream. Also, it produces no seeds making it a highly desirable fresh fruit variety. They are best straight out of the fridge, where the cold somehow makes the fruit juicier.
This mandarin variety has been trademarked as both ‘Dekopon’ and ‘Sumo’. In Korea it is called ‘Hallabong’ and in Brazil it is called ‘Kinsei’. No matter what it’s called, it can be recognized by its large protruding bump on the top of the fruit, which is ripe in early spring to early summer.
